Jeremy Podeswa's tremulous adaptation of Anne Michaels's novel aches with earnest intent and tasteful eroticism, yet it moves as heavily and lugubriously as a prison gate.
Stephen Dillane plays a writer domiciled in Canada, but still haunted by memories of his family's slaughter in the Holocaust, wrecking his marriage to the free-spirited Alex (Rosamund Pike). Can Michaela (Ayelet Zurer) heal his bruised soul? The question ought to feel urgent, but Dillane, fine actor that he is, looks bemused and distracted – not tormented and guilt-ridden.
