A painfully sincere drama about the friendship between Nelson Mandela (Dennis Haysbert) and his prison guard James Gregory (Joseph Fiennes), developed during the former's 27 years as a prisoner of white South Africa. Initially hostile to the celebrated "terrorist", Gregory's prejudices slowly erode under Mandela's saintly forbearance, and he risks his career as a "kaffir-lover". It's about the awakening of a conscience, but it's no The Lives of Others: the script is lumpen and prosaic, the performances so-so, and the passage of the years deeply unconvincing - though Haysbert at least gets Mandela's voice right.
