A haunted house, a whey-faced ghostling, black stains on the carpet and a hairpiece that gives a whole new meaning to "fright wig" are just some of the constituents of the baffling and slightly wearisome sequel to Japanese psycho-horror The Grudge.

Actress Kyoko (Noriko Sakai) loses her boyfriend and her unborn child in a car accident, but when she goes to her gynaecologist he assures that her all is well with the pregnancy: so who, or what, is gestating down there? Writer-director Takashi Shimizu delivers a few jumpy moments, but wraps the story in so many layers of reverie, nightmare and flashback that half the time you've no real grasp of what's going on. As for the other half, you couldn't really care less.
