Where are the rockstars of yesteryear? In the case of Arthur "Killer" Kane, the former bassist of the proto-punk outfit the New York Dolls, he overcame alcoholism and penury to become a mild-mannered librarian to a Mormon church in Los Angeles. And there the story might have ended, but for the determination of Morrissey to reunite the Dolls for the 2004 Meltdown Festival in London, the centrepiece of Greg Whiteley's modest and entertaining documentary. Pathos and comedy fight for the upper hand as Arthur reclaims his guitar from the pawn-shop, delights in the luxury of his hotel suite and responds to director Greg Whiteley's promptings with good-natured bemusement. It's sweet, and sad.
