But Josey's not going to stand for it, and hires a lawyer (Woody Harrelson) to launch the first class-action suit against a company in US legal history. For the first hour director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) does a good job of capturing this hard-scrabble life and the coarsened sensibility required to survive the brute chauvinist culture, but once legal proceedings get underway the film strays into the sudsy melodrama of courtroom revelations.

Theron is pretty good as the tenacious crusader for justice, so too the supporting cast of Sean Bean, Sissy Spacek and Richard Jenkins; and there's the bonus of an unreleased Dylan song ("Tell Ol' Bill") on the soundtrack.
