Pixar may reign supreme, but if it's in need of competition it might just cast an eye over the French team, led by Christian Volckman, that put together this amazing-looking graphic thriller. Based on the motion-capture technique, which accurately mimics an actor's movements and then projects them into animated 3D, this is also notable for being composed in a high-contrast black and white that makes the setting - a Paris of floating steel and glass, c2054 - look spectacular.

Less impressive is the script, a sliver of sci-fi fustian about biogenic experiments that filches from Minority Report and other ideas of Philip K Dick. All the same, the producers persuaded a good cast (Daniel Craig, Catherine McCormack, Ian Holm, Jonathan Pryce) to do the voice work.
