There is an eerie, ghostly quality to Fei Wu's classic 1948 melodrama.

The setting is a small village in rural China, not long after the end of the Sino-Japanese war.

Yuwen (Wei Wei) is the lonely wife of sickly husband Liyan (Shi Yu). When his old friend Zhang (Li Wei), a former sweetheart, pays a visit, long-suppressed emotions rise to the surface.

Her voice-over and the slow, beguiling storytelling add to the film's dream-like feel.
