When In Rome (PG)
Oh my. Disney push the limits of abject banality with this exercise in feel-good that will make anyone of even moderate intelligence feel very bad.
Kristen Bell plays a New Yorker who, in Rome for her sister's wedding, scoops out of a fountain a handful of coins that, by magic, win her a bunch of suitors/borderline stalkers, including Danny DeVito as a sausage manufacturer, Jon Heder as a street magician, and a nice-guy reporter (Josh Duhamel) whom she actually likes. There is something about Italy that appeals to the inner cretin of American film-makers, as those who saw Letters to Juliet can testify. This doesn't compete for soppiness, but in terms of irritating whimsy, cultural condescension and quarter-witted comedy it's every bit an equal.
