There is humour as well as outrage in this likeable documentary on the brief heyday of the environmentally friendly electric car. We're even treated to the sight of a manic Mel Gibson extolling the virtues of the beautiful, speedy, clean and doomed EV1 (while he still had a licence).
California's desire to improve its appalling air quality created pressure on General Motors to develop the EV1; reverence for oil money led the company to crush its own car and the ideal to a pulp. And its replacement? The Hummer.
