Three 'best of 2010' video montages of the year's films

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced that 248 films are eligible for Oscar nominations for Best Picture. This selection is a couple dozen less than the last two years but there are more than 300 released.

One way to catch them all is to watch a retrospective of clips snipped from most of year's films and posted on YouTube. The editors who created these five to seven minute montages took hours to compile the images from trailers, summarizing the breadth of 2010's cinematic offerings, including hits, indies, documentaries, horror and animation. What is clear from their quotes is that they share an appreciation for films.

'Cinema 2010' was created by editor Kees van Dijkhuizen who looks back at films from Let Me In to The Town, with soundtrack music from the year's movies. His 'Cinema 2009' video was viewed on YouTube close to a million times.
"Not only did this years movies push boundaries even further, they did so with impeccable risks," said Kees on his post. Taking note of the recession, he thinks films took risks, from Inception to small films like Splice and Buried. "It's crazy to think that all these films came out in one year, and so I tried my best do give them each a moment of glory."

'Filmography 2010' is edited by Gen Ip, a Canadian college student, who was inspired by Kees' work. She clocks through 270 films in six minutes, emphasizing overall themes.
"When you can put multiple movies together and make them work cohesively, the result can be quite revealing about the culture and society." she told website SlashFilm in an interview. She explains the mix of Kanye West's "Power" with dialogue excerpts connects ideas, letting the films feed off each other to create a cohesive piece.

'Cinescape 2010' by Matt Shapiro is the editor's latest montage highlighting the year's films, which he has created since 2006. The audio is The Killers' "A Dustland Fairytale."
"Escaping into the world of a film is a universal experience that we all crave, no matter who we are or how greatly our tastes differ," he wrote with the post. "The goal of this video is to at least begin to capture the essence of what that lose-yourself-to-film feeling is like...and to show just how many kick-ass movies 2010 gave us (because it's pretty easy to forget)."
