NORTHERNERS WILL be pleased to know that there are some compensations for a wet season, and one of these is a good growth of mushrooms and toadstools. On Sunday, 11 October, Dr Gordon Beakes, a mycologist from the University of Newcastle will be conducting a "fungi foray" in the grounds and park of Belsay Hall, 14 miles north-west of Newcastle in Northumberland. The tour begins at 10.30am and lasts two hours.

Tickets are limited, and booking is essential, by calling 01661 881636. The cost is pounds 6; pounds 3 for members of English Heritage.
