Jazz: London jazz festival

The London Jazz Festival prides itself on its breadth of canvas and while the seventh annual event makes the obligatory nod or two towards the late great Duke Ellington and features such stars as Branford Marsalis and Jan Garbarek, it also welcomes the more avant-garde in the shape of the likes of pianist Myra Melford and various European artists. But it is perhaps most notable for the organisers' readiness to stretch the boundaries of this thing called jazz. Accordingly, the world music styles go far beyond the exuberant Latin rhythms produced by the Afro Cuban All Stars (left) to include the more ethereal sounds of Asia and the primal blues of Africa represented by Malis Toumani Diabete, who shares what is likely to be a captivating performance with the legendary Taj Mahal.
