Sir: I am grateful to Philip Roberts (letter, 17 December) for reminding me that Australians have the good sense to regard cats as vermin. When I was staying in the north Sydney suburbs some years ago my hosts told me how native species, such as possums, were no longer seen in their garden as a result of predation by domestic cats. But rather than me emigrating to Australia couldn't a few Australian cat-hunters come here?
