Letter: Cures for the NHS

Sir: Ann Pugh (letter, 14 January) is harking back to some mythical golden age of nursing. Most "old fashioned" ward sisters were poorly educated, enforced unscientific, ritualistic nursing care, toadied to the doctors and imposed a destructively hierarchical regime. They crushed the spirit of generations of nurses who either conformed or got out. Nurses cannot pay the mortgage with pride and fulfilment. They do not need mothering, they need empowering.
