Sir: Your nefarious leading article "Why should anyone join the Tories?" (14 September) was a rhetorical question.
The answer was provided, quite unexpectedly, by Peter Mandelson, on the front page of the same edition, who stated that changes to workers rights brought in by the "back door" are "not appropriate" and a "matter for national governments". Your commentator pointed out, quite rightly, that Britain cannot alone veto the proposed legislation. At the same time, many trade unions are now warning of dire unemployment from the single currency.
If both Mr Mandelson and the unions, both not natural Tory supporters, can see the problems with Britain's current relationship with the EU, then there must be a significant bulk of the electorate who would support opposition to further integration.
