Sir: Your headline "Attacks could lead to a violent backlash" (3 May) gives a misleading impression of my comments on GMTV's Sunday Programme.

I did not say that ethnic minorities "could rise up in a violent backlash".

My response was to a question about stories of Asian youths organising themselves.

I said that ethnic minority communities have faced racial terrorism for over 30 years and that, for some people, keeping their heads down was no longer enough - they would want to band together to protect themselves from violent racist attacks.

This means being alert and vigilant and co-operating with one another and with the police.
