Letter: Europe's benefits
Sir: William Hague has called on the Government to abandon its commitment in principal to join the single currency. Its "keep the pound" campaign aims to run "a simple and emotional" crusade on the importance of not joining the euro.
Exactly the opposite is required. The people of Britain are not simple and are not always emotional. They have an overwhelming desire to be involved in a constructive debate about the euro and an appetite to know more.
The very benefits of a stable economy, reduced exchange rate volatility, low interest rates, price comparability, low inflation and a single market for business borrowing are all topics for greater discussion.
Our country's failure to participate in the final completion of Europe's single market by being part of the euro group will most likely put us at considerable disadvantage when dealing with the rest of Europe and other world trading blocks.
