Letter: European horizons

Sir: The sad truth is that Britain is no longer European. The French collapse in 1940, and their profound perfidy to their old ally, forced us inevitably into dependence on the United States. If, tomorrow, these islands were declared uninhabitable, the overwhelming majority of people would opt to make their new homes in America rather than on the Continent. Even somebody who would rather see Britain as a major component of an immensely powerful European nation has to acknowledge this melancholy fact.
