Sir: Paul Waugh ("Tories in secret alliance talks with neo-fascists", 7 June) wrongly describes me as "official Conservative Party representative" of the European Young Conservatives. The article reveals that Conservatives are considering joining the European parliamentary group of Jacques Chirac and Bertie Ahern, the President of France and the Irish Prime Minister.
Whether this reflects worse on the judgement of the Tory Party or on Mr Waugh for branding them as consorting with "neo-fascists" in the Italian Alleanza Nazionale is a moot point. What is certain is that I have never been an official of the EYC or involved in its relations with the British Conservatives. Nor have I ever met or spoken to a member of the AN.
