Sir: If Roy Hattersley believes that Monsanto is driven by a desire to improve food production in third world countries he should do an Internet search for "terminator gene".

In India 90 per cent of farmers save their own seed fort replanting and by doing so can select from the crop the plants that do best in their area, a simple but effective form of plant breeding. This will be impossible with terminator.
