Sir: Why does no politician ever mention cost when encouraging us to use public transport? When my wife and I want to go up to London for the day by train an open return costs us pounds 162. If we are prepared to go no earlier than 8.30am and return before 16.30 or later than 18.30, the cost is pounds 60.40. By car it costs us pounds 20. Although it would be far more convenient to go by train, we can't afford it.
