Letter: GM food furore

Sir: A rational approach to the subject of genetically engineered crops and the food produced from them would be to attempt to make a balance sheet of known, predicted and unpredictable benefits and costs to humans and the whole environment. An essential aspect of the benefits side of the balance sheet would be the identification of the sections of society that would gain most. Would this be the multinational biotechnology companies, the farmers, the supermarkets or the consumer, and would the benefits be greater in developed or developing countries?
