Sir: Nineteen ninety-eight has been even hotter than 1106, previously the millennium's hottest year (report, 2 November). Surely this will convince the sceptics of the reality of global warming, and the desperate need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in order to avoid a climatic catastrophe. Only one question remains. Why was it so hot in 1106?
