Letter: How to cut speed

Sir: A proposal that would, I believe, improve the rapidly deteriorating safety of non-urban roads is the introduction of "black boxes" for cars. I envisage a recording time of perhaps 10-15 minutes, with the tape re- used on a continuous basis. Data could come from sensors recording road speed, engine speed, gear selected, maybe outside weather data, but crucially including all modes of acceleration: speeding up, braking and cornering.

This data could be taken into account when apportioning blame after an accident.
