Sir: In the 1980s when the National Curriculum was set up, Home Economics was considered passe. Food, along with wood, metal, plastics and textiles, became a material on which Technology was to be wrought. The underlying theme changed from "Let's play house" - life skills - to "Let's pretend we're food technologists" - on the basis that the food industry is labour- intensive and a likely employer.
