Sir: Is the derivation of the word "dosh" really unknown (letter, 6 February)? Since visiting Portugal, I've thought that it came from the Portuguese unit of currency, the escudo. Portuguese is an interesting language to pronounce and listen to - it manages to be sibilant, nasal, guttural and elliptical at the same time. "Escudos" is pronounced "skoo- dosh" and sometimes the "dosh" is all you hear.
