Sir: Roy Sherwood ("Oliver Cromwell, king without a crown", Historical Notes, 30 April) has produced a brilliant and eye-opening study of how Cromwell outdid kings in royal panoply but the Lord Protector was an iron fist in a velvet glove, ruling the country, as no monarch had done, by means of a very expensive standing army.
He was unable to tolerate parliamentary government for any length of time, and summarily dismissed even the so-called "parliaments" he had packed with his own cronies and adherents.
