Sir: Since 1979 Britain has increased House of Commons membership by 24 and added 87 MEPs, the Scottish Parliament (129) and assemblies in Wales (60) and Northern Ireland (108). Soon comes Westminster's new second chamber (upwards of 200). In 20 years we will have created more than 600 new salaried jobs for professional party politicians, with pensions, expense accounts, secretaries, "researchers" etc. (Now some want English regional assemblies, full-time mayors and so on.) This gravy train will fund patronage, nepotism and corruption, at taxpayers' expense. We must stop it.
