Sir: Richard Welch is mistaken in thinking that "video" is a contraction of "videotape" (letter, 10 May). Captain Video, a Flash Gordon clone, thrilled American children at cinema matinees in the 1940s, long before anyone had heard of videotape or video recorders. The first video images were captured on vinyl discs or wire.
