Sir: Derek Fatchett was a tireless worker, committed to ending the victimisation of people in countries less democratic than our own and will be greatly missed (obituary, 11 May). As the first British minister to visit East Timor since the Indonesian invasion in 1975, he showed warmth and humanity to a suffering people. With the crucial vote to decide the island's future on 8 August it is vital that Derek Fatchett's work is now built upon by his successors at the Foreign Office.
