Sir: Having agitated for so long for the beef export ban to be lifted why is the livestock industry so ill prepared for it? There is only one abattoir licensed to slaughter cattle for export and that is in Cornwall. Animals are forced to endure many hours of travel. Conditions are likely to be even worse over the period of the eclipse, when roads into the West Country will be congested. Shipments of live animals should be suspended at this time.
