Sir: Professor Pengelley is right (letter, 8 September) that Darwin "told us what we are, where we came from, and how we got here". What we don't know is "why". That is a question of a completely different kind. Darwin's claim to be called man of the millennium will fall if he failed to understand the importance of that distinction. I suspect he regarded it as self-evident.
