Sir: Men are said to satisfy their macho lust for adventure and derring-do by reading spy, travel and war stories with a bit of violence thrown in. Charlotte Lamb (Literary Notes, 5 October) feels that "romantic fiction is the only purely feminine art form". As much of this genre is termed "bodice-rippers", usually romantic, historical stories involving violence, am I to understand that men like dishing it out while women wish to be on the receiving end?
