Sir: I never cease to marvel at Alistair Darling's "changes" to the benefits system. He said that all new claimants for the Job-Seeker's Allowance face a mandatory interview (report, 29 October).

At Loughton Job Centre all new claimants face a stiff initial interview, followed by "chase up" interrogations at ever-decreasing intervals. I know this as I sign on there.
