Sir: Your correspondent Mr Tyler (letter, 17 November) advocates adding the antidote methionine to paracetamol tablets on grounds of safety in overdose. This was tried 10 years ago but the product was withdrawn because methionine poses a risk to the health of the millions of people who use paracetamol normally.
The Department of Health considers the increased risk of heart disease, stroke and possibly cancer from methionine use outweighs the possible benefit of reducing the 2 per cent of suicides that involve paracetamol.
