Sir: Now that David Blunkett has rediscovered phonics, he should look at another approach that works. Put a volunteer tutor alongside a new reader for one hour a week and you will raise reading levels by one year in a single term. It is an amazingly cost-effective method which takes pressure off teachers, gives immense satisfaction to volunteers and helps children both to read and to enjoy books.
