letter: In Brief

Sir: The current issue of the journal The Structural Engineer lists 21 vacant posts with salaries averaging pounds 22,600. There is a maximum of pounds 35,000 and a minimum of pounds 15,000, with 14 posts below the mean.

The research referred to by Malcolm Shirley (letter, 10 September) which claims that the average earnings of chartered engineers are more than pounds 40,000 is disputed by engineers.

Much of the ambience surrounding engineering is far removed from the derring-do of history and current media spectaculars. Engineers are highly functional but status rules.
