Sir: Anne McElvoy lectures the Germans on their shortcomings but she can't even provide herself with German marks in the middle of one of their most historic cities ("The Germans do not want to change, but change they will", 16 August). Has she never heard of automatic cash machines, which dispense local currency at almost any hour of the day or night? A well travelled septuagenarian pensioner like myself, who lays no claim to excessive sophistication, has not seen the inside of a foreign bank for years.
