Sir: I look forward to the improved picture quality of digital TV, but feel increasing irritation about the parallel shift to the wide- screen 16:9 format. Apart from handling cinema films more sympathetically, I can see no justification for the change. One current absurdity concerns The Cold War, largely composed of archive film and talking heads. I'm not especially interested in the heads' room furnishings, but would like to see the missing 25 per cent of the historic material.
Am I correct in thinking that the push has come not from the broadcasters but the TV manufacturing industry?
