Sir: Your revelation that Cornwall and West Wales are among the poorest regions in Europe ("As impoverished as East Germany, Cornwall is poor man of Europe", 20 November) should put the last nail in the coffin of that misleading expression "the North-South divide".

The real divide is between inner and outer Britain, always has been, and always will be as long as London is the seat of government.
