Sir: The water industry is a bit too fast off the mark in claiming that an end to their right to cut off those who fail to pay bills will lead to big increases in charges ("Water supply guaranteed to non-payers", 19 November).
Figures for the year so far show that there will be about 1,000 disconnections. If that were to go up to 5,000, and each case meant the loss of three months' revenue, the effect would be to lose income from 1,250 customers out of more than 20,000,000 - one in 16,000. The effect on the average bill is one penny for every pounds 160.
