Letter: Israeli-Arab accord
Sir: Randhir Singh Baines' comments on the Wye agreement are misleading.
He claims that this agreement might fail because the "Muslim world remains committed to fighting Israel". But it is Israel's unrelenting drive to dominate Arab Jerusalem and humiliate the Palestinians which gives rise to such a "commitment".
It is also disingenuous to attribute the failure of previous "similar peace settlements between Muslim and non-Muslim nations" to "Islamic triumphalism". In many places where Muslims constitute a majority they are denied the right of self determination. Facing slaughter and persecution, they react. "Triumphalism" is, therefore, not the proper word to refer to the resistance to foreign occupation in such places as Kashmir, Kosovo and Palestine. It does, however, describe accurately the actions of those who seek to subjugate defenceless majorities.
