Sir: If an unemployed citizen of a Tory shire is not getting enough benefit, should their access to parliament be restricted to the opinions and priorities of their Tory MP? If a businessman in a Labour constituency is concerned about the European social chapter, should their access to parliament be restricted to the opinions and priorities of their Labour MP?
The "historic" link between the MP and the constituency exists only in the minds of MPs elected under the current system.
