Sir: You report that "the Austrian section of Lake Constance was at the highest level seen this century" ("Three die in Austrian floods", 24 May). By inference, therefore, the Swiss and German sections were not equally high. Could you offer, for the benefit of ignorant readers like myself, an explanation for this interesting hydrological phenomenon?
