Sir: As a Greek I felt the need to comment on the article by Philip Hensher on the Parthenon Marbles.
I appreciate the request for the return of the marbles to Greece, but it seems to be argued for the wrong reasons. It is not a matter of convenience ("Now, it is easy, and cheap, to travel") nor a matter of current habits ("casual intellectual enquiry now takes place more readily in the context of tourism") which dictates that. It is the fact that the Parthenon Marbles were acquired in a disputable way.
