Letter: Musical `elite'
Sir: Your leading article (12 August) on the elitism of music refers to the price of tickets as a barrier to attendance at classical music concerts. I wonder why this does not apply to pop concerts?
I recently had to book tickets for young relatives for a pop festival held at an airfield, where the overheads must be a fraction of those of the Royal Opera House: they were pounds 27.50 each plus a compulsory booking fee of over pounds 4 - plus pounds 1.20 for postage which had to be paid even if tickets were collected personally.
Is it not time that journalists investigate the elitism of pop concerts and the exploitation of youngsters by their organisers? I suspect classical music will turn out to be a bargain.
