Letter: Nato's regrets

Sir: Information is coming from Belgrade that levels of radioactivity in Yugoslavia are rising to a dangerous level. Jamie Shea on CNN has dismissed these allegations as "propaganda".

In the light of the possibility of long-term contamination in the area, should not neutral observers from the United Nations go to Belgrade to establish the truth or falsity of these claims? If they are indeed true, should not Nato be banned from dropping bombs and missiles containing depleted uranium?

If this ban is not carried out, not only will the Kosovan refugees be in danger if they return to their homeland, but there will be a risk of "Gulf war syndrome" among Nato troops entering Kosovo, whether as "peacemakers" or "peacekeepers".
