Sir: Anne McElvoy is quite wrong to assert that animals do not have rights. For domestic, captive and farm animals the right not to be caused "unnecessary suffering" was enshrined in British law as long ago as 1911.
It is not necessary to be able to claim rights in order to be protected by having them.
