No end to poverty

Sir: I have just been telephoned by a young lady from a hospital in Putney asking whether I would mind their sending me a little cardboard box which I could assemble into a collecting box for my "bits of loose change". Is this what the NHS has been reduced to? Or is it a better annual report on government progress than that published this week ("State of the nation", 27 July)?
