Sir: The result of Nato policy is that tyrants who are bold and well armed can do as they please, destroying places such as Chechnya. Dictators in faraway places that no one cares about can maim and kill to their hearts' content.

Nato governments should either be honest in declaring the interests they are defending or they should intervene wherever human rights are ignored.
